The engineers at Light Emitting Designs have designed and built electronics for the veterinary world for over 24 years and their consistent quality, experience and credibility are second to none. The 21st Century designs in the STS-2 are the brainchild of Dan Sumerel, world-renown horse trainer and author of Finding The Magic.

Sumerel Therapeutic Systems is excited at the opportunity to bring horse owners an improved line of products that updates the original scanning and light therapy equipment with changes developed directly from the knowledge gained through Finding and Treating Physical Problems in more than 3,500 animals over almost a dozen years.

Gladstone Equine is Central Virginia's exclusive distributor of STS-2 Systems from Sumerel Therapeutics.

Physical Problems in Horses

Physical problems in horses can produce some very frustrating situations:

1. Gladstone Equine knows that every horse owner has suffered through the anxiety of knowing there is something physically wrong with their horse, but they’re unable to pin down the exact issue. In many cases it may be obvious what the horse’s symptom or symptoms are, but the specific locations are unclear. Often that situation leads to the all too common attitude of, “We’ll inject the _____ today and if he’s not better in a few days, then we’ll try injecting the _____.” This approach is expensive, unfair to the horse and pretty vague at best.

2. Unfortunately many people still subscribe to the equally inadequate, “Give em 30 days off and he’ll be just fine.” While it’s true that rest is a necessary part of the healing process and usually minimizes any additional injury, most injuries call for a more proactive, therapeutic approach.

3. And many of you have stood around and watched a lame horse trot off as several people did their best to interpret what they are seeing. You’ve seen people who are brilliant at diagnosing a problem by watching the horse trot out, but remember, they’re still using subjective interpretation to decide on treatment.

What Are the Options?

It all sounds a bit vague, doesn’t it? Yet what are your options? The horse can’t talk, although many give it a good try. And unfortunately when it comes to pain or injury, your horse, by his very nature, is actually trying to hide his pain from you.

As a prey animal, your horse knows that any horse who limps or shows any distress invites the predators to focus on him as their target! Horses are inherently stoic, and do their best to hide pain. To that end, they have become masters of compensation in order to hide their problem and keep up with the herd.

This means that, in many cases, by the time you see a problem, the actual cause may be in a totally different part of the horse’s anatomy. Add to that the fact we all know, ‘a horse can hurt himself if you put him in a padded stall’ and it’s easy to understand why caring for your horses’ physical problems has been as difficult a challenge as anything horse people endure. Two-Part Sumerel Therapeutic System (STS-2)

STS-2 from Sumerel Therapeutic Systems is a two-part system. The first component is the STS-2 SCANNER, a device that allows a therapist to analyze the horse’s body externally and to pinpoint the exact locations of any problems. The SCANNER emits a micro current of electricity which neither you nor the horse can feel. That current is used to measure the relative resistance in the tissue it contacts. High resistance means normal, healthy tissue. Low resistance means that some cellular damage is evident. Click here for details on the STS-2 Scanner.

The second component of the Sumerel Therapeutic Systems STS-2 is a collection of pulsed LED light therapy devices called the Equine Therapy Unit, or ETU. For over twenty years, Veterinarians have used the power of light therapy on injured performance horses in all disciplines. Vets and trainers also use light therapy as a post-training or post-performance maintenance protocol.

The STS-2 from Sumerel Therapeutic Systems includes two clusters of red and infra-red LED arrays that effectively treat all parts of the equine anatomy. In addition, we have specialized components such as a poll treatment unit, leg unit, and LED arrays in pads of various sizes.
