STS-2 SCANNER
The STS-2 SCANNER from Sumerel Therapeutic Systems is a device that allows you to externally scan a horse’s body and pinpoint exactly where the horse’s injury or other physical problems exist. Originally produced by CEFCO Electronics for the nearly defunct Bio-Scan, The STS-2 SCANNER and Equine Therapy Unit have been re-engineered and upgraded with 49 key improvements by Dan Sumerel in cooperation with CEFCO engineers.
When the therapist scans the horse’s body, the scanner emits a micro current of electricity which neither the therapist nor the horse can feel. That current is used to measure the resistance in the tissue it contacts. High resistance means normal, healthy tissue. Low resistance means there is something wrong there.
When a problem is detected, the STS-2 SCANNER beeps. It even varies the strength of the beep to determine the severity of each problem found. (Loud, shrill beeps indicate a more severe problem than a softer beep.) The SCANNER does NOT diagnose problems. It simply locates where problems exist.
Think you have a hock injury? Scan the hock. If it beeps, there IS a hock problem. If not, the problem is elsewhere. We always scan the whole horse as you really never know everything that is going on in any given horse.
People often ask, “So what does it work on? Muscles? Tendons?”
Well, actually it does quite a bit more than would seem obvious. In fact it can locate problems of all different types, including internal issues and more. To understand how this can happen, its’ important to understand that the STS-2 SCANNER actually locates problems in two different modes: direct measurement and indirect measurement.
Direct measurement is easy enough to understand. As we scan along a horse’s sore muscle and the SCANNER beeps everywhere there is an injury or other physical problem. We are reading a problem directly in the tissue we are scanning.
Indirect measurement is a bit harder to explain, but it relates to acupuncture. Acupuncture is the science of using the energy that runs a living body to help maintain the balance of function in that body.
As the STS-2 SCANNER goes over the body, it may beep due to direct measurement of a local problem or it may beep due to finding an ‘active’ acupuncture point. That indicates there is a problem relating to the part of the body with which that acupuncture point is associated.
The horse’s injury or other physical issue could be internal or external. You most likely will not know what each acupuncture point the SCANNER indicates actually relates to unless you are a doctor of acupuncture. And here is the strange part: it really doesn’t matter. All that matters is that there is something wrong with this horse and now you’ve found it.
Each time the SCANNER beeps, indicating a problem, we mark the spot with a water crayon, so we know where to treat with The STS-2 Equine Therapy Unit after we finish scanning. The
STS-2 ETU
is
Low Energy Photo Therapy or LED light therapy.
After we have scanned a whole horse (which takes about 20-30 minutes), it is amazing to see what shows up in green dots! We may have drawn muscles or the outline of a saddle or whatever. After doing over
3,500 horses
, it’s still fascinating!
