Equine Therapy Unit

Equine Therapy Unit First it’s important to understand that the Equine Therapy Unit's pulsed LED light does not heal anything, it’s actually the body that does the healing. But for decades it has been shown that certain types of light, specifically red and infrared wavelengths, have a profound, almost immediate effect on living tissue. In fact the pulsed LED light therapy acts as a stimulus to accelerate the healing process in the body. The body does the healing, but the light can start it where it has stalled and speed it up where it is going slowly. And it does so with no risk or contraindications!

If you have never heard of ‘light therapy’ this may sound a bit off the wall but it is pure science, and it can produce incredible results. We know of thirty-seven horses which were about to be put down for a variety of reasons, yet all recovered after the use of a scanner and The Equine Therapy Unit's pulsed LED light therapy -- to the amazement of those observing!

Treating Horse Injuries With The ETU

To treat a horse’s injury or other problem area with the Equine Therapy Unit, simply hold a small round ‘cluster’ of pulsed LED’s (light emitting diodes --10 red and 20 infra-red) over the injury or problem area for about 20-30 seconds. The ETU powers two clusters of diodes so you can treat two areas at once. The therapist has the ability to choose one of seven different frequencies at which the lights are pulsed. This enables you to fine-tune the effect of the light therapy. The new ETU can even be programmed to treat on one frequency, then change to a different frequency automatically, further accelerating the healing process!

As an example, frequency 7 is acts as a sedative for treating very sore horse injuries or areas of inflammation. Frequency 1 is very deep penetrating and far more stimulating. If you treated an area on frequency 7 and then on frequency 5, each for 20 seconds, the effect will be even greater than if you only treat with one frequency. It’s quite simple to learn the application of the various frequencies; we provide a comprehensive chart which is a very powerful tool.

You can also treat various horse injuries or physical problems by using some of the new STS-2 Light Therapy Flex Products such as the PTU (Pole Therapy Unit. These are flexible neoprene units with the diodes mounted in specific locations and containing their own battery packs so they are completely self-contained. They can be wrapped on an area of the body and then left to treat for 10-20 minutes.

A favorite soft product is the PTU, also known as the Happy Hat! Designed to treat the stress in the poll from halter trauma, the PTU is used during the entire STS-2 process as a conventional sedation technique. It can help a horse with a stiff or sore neck to free up and move normally again. The Poll Trauma Unit also tends to calm the horse down, often in dramatic fashion due to the endorphin release caused by the use of the lights near the brain and spinal column.

Many farriers now use the PTU when they encounter a horse too excited to trim. They’ll tie the horse in a quiet spot and put the cap on. The farrier then returns 30 minutes later to trim a nice, quiet horse. Pretty neat stuff!
